Most riders need two to four pairs of bib shorts: two if you ride one or two times a week, three for three to four rides, and four if you ride most days or travel for multi-day trips. The rule is simple: own enough pairs that you never wear the same one twice before it has been washed and dried. This guide shows how to work out your number.
How many pairs for how many rides a week?
One or two rides a week: two pairs. Three or four rides: three pairs. Five or more rides, or a multi-day trip: four pairs. The extra pair is the one that covers a wash day, a wet ride that leaves a pair damp, or a ride you did not plan. Own fewer and you end up re-wearing a pair that has not been properly washed.
Why not wear the same pair twice before washing?
Wash bib shorts after every ride. Sweat and bacteria build up in the chamois, and wearing a dirty pair again increases the chance of chafing and irritation. If you get persistent sores or irritation, speak to a doctor rather than trying to ride through it. Our guide to washing cycling kit covers the routine, and chafing prevention covers the rest.
Do long rides change the number?
Long rides change which pair you reach for more than how many you own. A pair with a multi-density chamois suits rides over four hours better than a thinner one, so a rider doing both short and long rides often keeps one dedicated long-ride pair in the rotation. See the best bib shorts for long rides and which DTR bib shorts to choose by use case.
Should you rotate the same style or mix?
Mixing is smart. A standard pair, a long-ride pair and, if you carry food and a phone, a cargo pair cover most riding. Rotating also spreads the wear across pairs, which helps each last longer; see how long bib shorts last.
What about winter and summer?
Bib shorts are a warm-weather pair; in cold weather you swap to thermal bib tights or add warmers. Count your shorts and your tights as separate rotations so you do not run short as the seasons change. For fit, see how to choose cycling bib shorts.
Frequently asked questions
Is one pair enough?
Only if you ride rarely and can wash and dry the pair before the next ride. Otherwise a second pair is the cheapest way to avoid re-wearing a dirty one.
Do I need different pairs for men and women?
Yes. Pick the cut made for your body; see men's bib shorts and women's bib shorts.
