What to Wear Under a Cycling Vest

Under a cycling vest, wear a short-sleeve jersey on mild days of roughly 10–16°C, and add a base layer as it gets colder. The vest always goes over the jersey, never under it, because its job is to block wind across your chest and core while your arms stay free. This guide covers what to put beneath it by temperature, and what to avoid.

What do you wear under a cycling vest in mild weather?

A short-sleeve jersey, and nothing else, is enough for the milder end of the vest range. Add arm warmers if your arms get cold before your core does. The vest is there to stop wind chill on the move, and it packs away in a pocket when the sun comes out. If you are unsure whether you need one at all, our guide on whether you need a cycling gilet sets out when it earns its place.

When do you add a base layer?

Add a base layer once you are below about 10°C, or earlier if you run cold or ride at an easy pace. It sits against the skin to move sweat away, which matters more than thickness: a damp layer under a windproof vest chills you quickly. Choose a lightweight or thermal weight to match the day, and read our base layer guide for how they differ.

Should you wear a long sleeve jersey under a vest?

Yes, when it is cold enough that bare forearms are the problem. A long sleeve jersey plus a vest covers arms and core without the bulk of a jacket, and you can unzip the jersey as you warm up. Compare the options in our guide to arm warmers vs a long sleeve jersey. Make sure the vest is cut to sit over the jersey without bunching at the shoulders.

Does the type of vest change what goes underneath?

Yes. A windproof vest blocks wind but adds little warmth, so it works best over a base layer and jersey. A thermal vest holds heat in, so you can usually wear one layer less. Windproof vs thermal gilets explains the difference, and our guide to the best cycling vests helps you choose.

What should you avoid wearing under a vest?

Avoid cotton, which holds sweat and makes you cold the moment you stop, and avoid anything bulky that bunches under the vest. Keep what you carry in the jersey pockets accessible: a vest that covers the pockets should still leave them reachable, so check before you ride. FAQ

Do I wear a vest over or under my jersey?

Over. A vest sits on top of the jersey so the jersey pockets stay accessible and you can take the vest off without undressing.

Is a vest warm enough on its own?

Not in cold weather. A vest protects the core; add a base layer, and arm warmers or a long sleeve jersey, as the temperature drops.

Can I wear a vest in the rain?

A vest keeps off wind and light spray, but it will not keep your arms dry. For wet rides, a jacket is the better choice. See gilet vs packable jacket.
