Technical cycling jerseys made from synthetic fabric barely shrink in a normal wash; what ruins them is heat. A hot wash or a tumble dryer can damage the stretch and shape of the fabric, which feels like shrinkage because the jersey no longer sits as it did. This guide covers what shrinks, what does not and how to wash a jersey so the fit stays put.
Do cycling jerseys shrink in the wash?
Rarely. Synthetic performance fabrics are stable, so a jersey washed at a cool temperature comes out the same size. Natural fibres such as cotton or merino blends are more likely to shrink than a synthetic jersey, so always follow the care label. If a jersey feels tighter after a wash, check whether it was dried with heat: that, not the water, is the usual cause.
What actually damages the fit?
High temperature. Hot water and tumble drying can weaken elastane, the stretch fibre in cycling kit, so the jersey loses recovery and stops hugging the way it should. Fabric softener is the other culprit: it coats the fibres and works against wicking. Both are easy to avoid. Our guide to jersey fabric explains why.
How should you wash a cycling jersey?
Turn it inside out, close the zip, wash cool with a mild detergent and skip the softener. A short cycle is enough. Wash it soon after the ride: sweat left in the fabric is harder to remove later. For the full routine see how to wash cycling kit, and if there is a smell that will not go, how to remove cycling kit smell.
Can you tumble dry a cycling jersey?
It is better not to. Air drying away from direct heat protects the fabric, and a technical jersey dries quickly anyway. Hang it from the shoulders, out of strong sun and off a radiator. More in how to dry cycling kit.
Can a jersey that shrank be fixed?
Not reliably. If damage came from heat, the fibres do not come back. If the jersey is simply dry and tight, a gentle stretch while damp can help, but it will not repair a fabric that lost its recovery. Check the fit against the size guide before deciding it is the jersey and not the size.
How do you pick a size that will still fit?
Size for the fit you want on the bike, not for the wash. A race-fit jersey is cut close by design; if you sit between sizes, read how to size cycling kit and how a cycling jersey should fit before ordering.
FAQ
Do cycling jerseys shrink in the dryer?
Heat can damage the stretch and shape of the fabric. Air dry instead.
What temperature should you wash a cycling jersey?
Cool, following the care label. Avoid hot cycles.
Why does my jersey feel tighter after washing?
Usually heat or residue from softener. Rewash cool with no softener and air dry.
