Fleece Leg Warmers: When They Beat Standard Warmers | DTR

Fleece leg warmers beat standard leg warmers once the temperature drops below about 12°C. DTR's fleece pair is made for 12 to 5°C; the standard pair covers 18 to 12°C.

This guide sets out the temperature split, what the fleece changes on the bike, and the point where warmers stop being the right answer.

Which temperature calls for which pair?

Standard leg warmers suit 18 to 12°C: cool mornings that warm up into the ride. Fleece leg warmers take over from 12 down to 5°C, when a thin knit no longer holds enough heat against your legs. Below 5°C, thermal bib tights are the better tool. The wider logic is in do you need leg warmers?

What does the fleece actually change?

The fleece face traps a layer of warm air against the skin, so the same legs feel warmer at the same speed. The fabric stays elastic, so it does not restrict the pedal stroke. DTR's fleece leg warmers also carry reflective strips for early starts and late finishes, and a wide silicone band on the top edge keeps them in place.

Do fleece warmers stay up?

Yes, when the size is right. The silicone band grips the thigh, and each warmer is cut for its own leg, left for left and right for right, so the shape follows the leg instead of twisting. For men we recommend the same size as your jersey; for women, one size down from the jersey. The cycling leg warmers guide covers fit in more detail.

Are fleece warmers too warm for a long ride?

They can be, which is why the range matters. Above 12°C the fleece pair will run hot on climbs; take the standard pair instead, or take the fleece pair off and pack it in a jersey pocket once the sun is up. Both are light and compact. Arm-side the same logic applies, and fleece arm warmers are the matching piece.

When should you switch to thermal bib tights?

Below about 5°C, or on any ride where you want one garment from hip to ankle with a chamois built in. Warmers pair with bib shorts, so you can adjust mid-ride; tights commit you for the day. Leg warmers vs bib tights compares the two, and how to choose thermal bib tights picks up where this leaves off. For the full cold-weather stack, see what to wear for winter cycling.
