Yes, a little — a black jersey absorbs more of the sun's energy than a white one, and standing still in direct sun you will feel the difference. What the colour is actually doing
A dark surface absorbs more visible light and converts it to heat; a light surface reflects more of it away. In direct sun a black jersey can sit noticeably warmer to the touch than a white one — that part isn't in dispute. What is in dispute is how much of that extra surface heat ever reaches you.
The heat lands on the outside of the fabric. To make you hotter it has to cross the fabric and the layer of air between the fabric and your skin. On a loose garment in still air, much of it doesn't. On a garment plastered to your skin by sweat, more of it does. That's why fit changes the answer as much as colour does.
Why moving air changes everything
Riding at 25 km/h puts a constant stream of air across the jersey, and that air carries away far more heat than the colour difference is adding. Convection is simply a bigger effect than absorption at any speed you'd call riding. This is why the black-kit question feels obvious standing in a car park and stops mattering once you're rolling.
The exception is when you stop moving. Traffic lights, a mechanical, the queue at a feed stop, a slow climb in still air — that's where a dark jersey in full sun genuinely becomes uncomfortable, because you've removed the airflow that was doing the work.
There's a counterintuitive result worth knowing: research into loose black desert robes found that the dark fabric warms the air trapped underneath it, which then rises and drives more airflow through the garment. That effect depends on the garment being loose enough to have a chimney inside it. A race-fit jersey doesn't work that way, so don't extend the finding to cycling kit.
Three things that matter more
Fabric weight and weave come first. An open, lightweight mesh in black will run cooler than a dense, tightly woven fabric in white, every time. How much air the fabric lets through is a bigger lever than how much light it reflects.
Fit is second. A jersey that sits close but not compressed keeps a thin moving air gap against your skin and lets sweat evaporate off the fabric surface. A jersey that's stuck to you loses that, and evaporation is where almost all of your cooling actually comes from.
Coverage is third, and it cuts both ways. Bare skin in direct sun heats faster than covered skin, which is why long sleeves in light technical fabric are common in genuinely hot, exposed conditions. More fabric isn't automatically hotter.
When the colour is worth thinking about
Pick the lighter option when you'll be stationary in the sun for long stretches, riding in very high UV at low speed, or racing somewhere the road surface is throwing heat back at you. In those situations the airflow argument weakens and absorption gets its say.
Ignore the colour when you're riding at speed in moving air, when the choice is between a light-fabric black jersey and a heavy white one, or when visibility is the real priority. On a dull day or in traffic, being seen is worth more than a fraction of a degree.
And there's the practical argument the other way: dark kit hides road spray, chain marks and the general grime of a wet season, which is why so much winter kit is black. That's a laundry decision, not a thermal one, and it's a perfectly good reason.
Does colour affect sun protection?
Darker and denser fabrics generally block more UV than light, thin ones — which is the opposite of the heat answer. A thin white jersey can let a meaningful amount of UV through to your skin, and riders are often surprised to burn through a lightweight top on a long day.
If UV is the concern, look for a stated UPF rating rather than reasoning from the colour. Weave density, fibre type and how much the fabric has stretched across your back all matter more than the shade, and a jersey stretched tight over your shoulders protects less than the same fabric relaxed.
