What a base layer actually does
A base layer moves sweat off your skin so your jersey and jacket can do their jobs. Worn next to the skin, it spreads moisture across a larger surface to evaporate, keeps a thin stable layer of air against your body, and stops the clammy chill that hits when you ease off after an effort. The fabric decides how fast all of that happens.
Where merino wins
Merino insulates even when wet, which makes it forgiving in cold, wet conditions and on long unpredictable days. It also resists odour naturally — after three days of touring, merino is still socially acceptable. And it has a wide comfort band: the same piece feels reasonable across a bigger temperature range than most synthetics.
The costs: it holds more water, dries slower, weighs more when soaked, and is more fragile — both in the wash and against velcro and zips.
Where synthetic wins
Speed. A technical synthetic base layer moves sweat and dries faster than merino, which matters most when you sweat hardest: intervals, racing, climbing in the heat. It's lighter, keeps its compression-like fit wash after wash, and modern anti-odour treatments have closed much of merino's freshness advantage for single-day use. It's also more durable and easier to care for.
The cost: once truly soaked and cold — a long descent after a hard climb — a thin synthetic piece insulates less than damp merino. That's what a windbreaker or vest in the pocket is for.
So which should you ride?
Choose by intensity, temperature and duration. High intensity in mild or hot weather: lightweight synthetic, sleeveless if you run hot. Cold-weather training: a thermal synthetic base layer with a thermoregulating fabric, or merino if your rides are long and steady. Multi-day touring or bikepacking with limited washing: merino's odour resistance is a real advantage. Racing: synthetic, always — the drying speed wins.
