For most riders that means merino for long, cold, steady rides and multi-day trips, and synthetic for high-intensity efforts where sweat volume is the main problem.

What each fabric actually does
A base layer's job is to move sweat off your skin fast enough that you stay dry and thermally stable. Merino fibre absorbs moisture into its core and keeps insulating while damp, and it resists odour bacteria naturally. Synthetic fibre absorbs almost nothing — it transports sweat across the fabric and dries fast, but holds smell sooner.
Where merino earns its place
Merino is the choice when conditions are cold, efforts are steady, and you're out for hours. Because the fibre keeps insulating when wet, a soaked merino base layer never produces the sudden chill a drenched synthetic can on a descent or a café stop. Odour resistance makes it the default for multi-day trips — you can wear the same base layer for days without it turning.
The costs: merino absorbs more sweat, dries slower, weighs more when saturated, and a fine merino knit is more fragile than polyester — it wants gentler washing and pills sooner under backpack straps or jersey seams.
Where synthetic earns its place
Synthetic base layers win when you sweat hard and need it gone: threshold sessions, short sharp winter rides, racing, and hot weather. They move moisture across the fabric and into the jersey faster than merino, dry in a fraction of the time, shrug off repeated machine washing, and cost less. If you finish rides with a soaked back, a good synthetic keeps you drier than merino at the same weight.
The cost is the smell — synthetic fibres hold onto odour bacteria, so they want washing after every ride — and the deeper chill when you stop moving in cold air with a saturated layer.
Which weight for which temperature?
Fabric weight matters more than fibre for warmth. A lightweight base layer of either fibre covers roughly 10°C and up; a midweight covers the 0–10°C band under a jersey and jacket; below freezing you want a heavier knit or a double layer. Sleeve length follows the same logic — long sleeves add warmth without bulk under a winter jacket.
Are merino blends the answer?
Blends — a merino face with a synthetic core, or mixed yarns — aim at the middle: faster drying than pure merino, less smell than pure synthetic, better durability than fine wool. They're a sensible default if you refuse to own two systems. Purists at either end of the intensity spectrum will still prefer the pure fibre that matches their riding.

Is merino too warm for summer cycling?
Not inherently — ultralight merino regulates temperature well in heat — but at high sweat rates a light synthetic moves moisture faster and feels drier. Summer merino makes most sense for long steady days and bikepacking, where odour control across repeated wears outweighs peak wicking speed.
Do merino base layers really not smell?
They resist odour dramatically better than synthetics — multiple rides between washes is normal — but they're not immune. Lanolin-related antibacterial properties slow bacteria growth; they don't stop it. Air the layer between wears and wash gently when it needs it.
How many base layers do you actually need?
Three cover almost everything: a lightweight for warm weather, a midweight long-sleeve for the cold half of the year, and one more of whichever you wear most so laundry never decides your kit. Add a heavyweight only if you regularly ride below freezing.
